Hajj is one of the five fundamental pillars of Islam and a sacred journey that every Muslim must perform at least once in their lifetime, provided they are physically and financially able. It is a profound spiritual experience that symbolizes complete submission to Allah (SWT) and unity among Muslims from all over the world.
Every year, millions of pilgrims gather in the holy city of Makkah to perform the rituals of Hajj during the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, following the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
When Is Hajj Performed?
Hajj takes place annually from the 8th to the 12th of Dhul Hijjah. During these five sacred days, pilgrims perform a series of rituals centered around the Holy Kaaba, Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah.
1. Hajj Preparations (Entering the State of Ihram)
Hajj begins when pilgrims make the sincere intention (Niyyah) and enter the sacred state of Ihram at the designated boundary points called Miqats.
Miqat Locations for Pilgrims:
Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali) – For pilgrims coming from or through Madinah
Al-Juhfah (near Rabigh) – For pilgrims from Syria, Egypt, and North Africa
Qarn al-Manazil (As-Sail Al-Kabeer) – For pilgrims from Najd and Taif
Yalamlam (Sa’adiyah) – For pilgrims from Pakistan, India, and Yemen
Dhat Irq – For pilgrims from Iraq
Preparing for Ihram:
Pilgrims should prepare themselves physically and spiritually by:
Performing Ghusl (full body purification)
Trimming nails and unwanted hair
Wearing clean Ihram garments:
Men: Two white unstitched cloths (Izar & Rida)
Women: Modest Islamic clothing
Offering two Rak’ah of Salah
Making Niyyah and reciting the Talbiyah:
“Labbayka Allahumma labbayk…”
Pilgrims should continue reciting Talbiyah until the beginning of Tawaf.
2. Performing Umrah (For Hajj al-Tamattu)
Pilgrims performing Hajj al-Tamattu first complete the rituals of Umrah, which include:
Tawaf around the Kaaba
Sa’i between Safa and Marwah
Hair cutting (Halq or Taqsir)
After this, pilgrims exit Ihram and later re-enter Ihram for Hajj.
3. Step-by-Step Hajj Rituals
I. Re-Enter Ihram & Make Intention for Hajj
On the 8th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims enter Ihram again and declare their intention for Hajj.
II. Travel to Mina
Pilgrims travel to Mina, where they spend the day and night performing the five daily prayers.
III. Travel to Arafat (Waquf)
On the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims travel to Mount Arafat. From noon to sunset, they stand in prayer and supplication. This is the most important ritual of Hajj, known as Waquf.
IV. Night in Muzdalifah
After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha together, rest overnight, and collect pebbles for the stoning ritual.
V. Rami (Stoning the Devil)
Pilgrims return to Mina and throw seven pebbles at Jamrat al-Aqabah, symbolizing the rejection of evil.
VI. Nahr (Animal Sacrifice)
Pilgrims perform or arrange an animal sacrifice, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) devotion to Allah. The meat is distributed to the needy.
VII. Halq or Taqsir (Hair Cutting)
Men: Shave or trim their hair
Women: Trim a fingertip-length of hair
This signifies spiritual renewal and humility.
VIII. Tawaf al-Ifadah & Sa’i
Pilgrims return to Makkah to perform Tawaf and Sa’i, a core requirement of Hajj.
IX. Repeat Rami on 11th & 12th Dhul Hijjah
Pilgrims stone all three Jamarat:
Jamrat al-Oola
Jamrat al-Wusta
Jamrat al-Aqabah
X. Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wida)
Before leaving Makkah, pilgrims perform a final Tawaf around the Kaaba, offering gratitude and prayers to Allah.
